I'm Riderisha, one of the producers of the show, and we are here today with Adam Keating, cofounder and CEO at Colab. Adam, thanks so much for joining me today. Read I'm excited to be here and I'm excited to kick off podcast. Absolutely Adams joining us all the way from Canada. I'm in Florida. So we've come together to bring you guys a great episode Joint Forces here, but to give our listeners a some more context about what the goal of this episode is. It's just to share with you what you can expect from this podcast as a whole. And before we jump into that, Adam, I have a question... to set the stage for us all right, in your opinion, what's the biggest challenge your industry is facing today? It's good question. There's there's a whole grouping of challenges I think that are kind of, you know, making it difficult to manufacture and design complex products today. And you know, we really tie it back to where it stems from, is the fact that the tooling that we're using is really twenty years outdated and if you look at what we're giving mechanical engineer to build something with versus software engineer here, is like night and day. And it's time where engineering, too's building physical products, actually get the tools and processes they need to actually build innovate a lot faster so they can folks on engineering folks and solving problems and really not think about all the administrative work that's currently wasting half their time today. So, you know, the big challenge is really getting the getting the people, the process and the tools right and not accepting status quo like right now today, what we see is the biggest risk and biggest challenge is that people are just accepting, you know, the way things have always worked and then when you look at something in comparison, right you talk with software development, software development...

...has had ai and FT's. Everything happened in the last couple of years and it seems like, you know, decades worth of advancement in years. You look at people building physical products. We went to the moon fifty years ago and we're just now back at the moon. You're talking about building electric cares. There's been electric cares for a really long time. We're only just now getting to a point where they're even practical to manufacture. You type A climate change. We've been talking about it for a long time. There hasn't been a whole lot of like, you know, substantial change actually fix that and we're running out of time and our fundamental belief here is that, you know, unless we give teams better tools and and ways to actually work together, that our pace innovations and just not going to keep up with the needs of the world. So who is collab making this podcast for? So the podcast was really, you know, the genesis was that we talked to a lot of customers and people in industry who are really keen to figure out how to work smarter, what tools they should be going after, what problems they should really be taskly now. But there's a lot of noise and there's not a...

...lot of good places to go and hear from people like themselves. So this podcast is really built for engineers engineering managers and directors, people who want to be seen, as you know, the innovator in the space, to think of new processes, new technology and ways of just engineer smarter. So really, if you're an engineer or you're working in engineering team and your team is building a complex manufacturing product, you want to see yourself, as you know, a trend setter and a game changer for your team and the industry. It's a great place to listen to people just like yourself and hear how they're getting through those challenges and see what you can learn and take take an your every day to dive into that a little more. What types of conversations are you hoping to have on the show? So the first thing is going to be organic fun and a whole lot of just understanding a real things that are happening. The whole intention of the show was actually catch people talking about things that are, you know, just real and the real experience, the real troubles people are having, and not sort of the you know, the thousand foot, Tenzero foot level you usually get. We want to dive into real...

...problems, examples of how people are fixing them, you know, a tool that they've taken and made work to fix a problem for them so that other people can listen to this podcast at the end of, you know, twenty thirty minutes, take away and nugget of something they can tangibly do. So the conversations are be real fun. We're going to keep it nice and, you know, exciting, but the whole goals dive into some specific topic, whether it might be around what types of tools can be used to help take that first step in digital transformation, or how can we better do a change review or how can I work with my team when, you know, half our team is a twelve our time zone shift away, we're out of the stay up all night to actually talk to them. It's gonna be probable stuff like that where we can get in say, you know, here's what someone else is done and here's what you can potentially try and do, and we're looking to talk to people who are, you know, being really creative and really challenging that status quo and who would just not accept anymore that this is the way it is, because the quicker we get there, the better will be. In five or ten years from now you won't need this podcast anymore because if we all figured out. That's awesome, and your opinion to dive more into like the practical application, how your show will be helpful and your...

...opinion, what are some things that people in your industry should actually start doing? So the very first thing I honestly right now is that we're not understanding what the core root cause of a lot of our troubles are. We look at things and say, you know, we're always late on this project or we're going over budget or we're making a lot of mistakes, but we don't actually take that back to like the nuts and bolts. We get lost in these bigger digital transformation initiatives and not really understanding like the core fundamentals. And a lot of times it goes back to simple things like communication, for example. If you think about any company, any industry, communication so critical. Yet in the manufacturing world a lot of that is stitched together by like emails and spread cheets and there's nothing even better to help people talk together. There isn't even a tool that helps and get there. So one of the things I think is, you know, diving into the fundamentals of what are the basic parts that are causing teams trouble, and a lot of that is just getting started with something that is like small enough that the team's excited about and not so overwhelming so they can actually get into it and see some real value you. So it could be as simple as a gain. Why move to...

...the cloud? You know, people have been talking abouts forever and every other industry. COVID certainly push teams towards Microsoft teams and you know other things, but we're still a little bit hesitant. You know why is that? And it's just stunting a lot of these like smaller opportunistic wins which help drive better behavioral change, which Alp me give you the opportunities to see those things people want. So I think we're going to talk a lot about the small winds. I've been joking with people saying that, you know, to really solve these problems you're trying to get base hits and not home runs. You're really trying to get base hits, build momentum, influence something practical and know it's, you know, working towards your vision and then doing that, the change starres almost just build on top of itself. Instead of myself, you know, as a leader in the company, just pushing people to make change you've got inspire people to make change and they give him something practical to do with that. You have to inspire people to make change. I really like that.
